Pottery of Sifnos

In October 2022 the Archipelago Network team traveled to Sifnos in order to begin a research and documentation project on traditional Sifnian pottery, a practice closely intertwined with the island’s cultural heritage, artistic creativity and economy.

The project’s realization involves three main elements: digitization of audiovisual archives related to Sifnian pottery; production of a series of documentary films about active pottery workshops; and completion of interdisciplinary research in collaboration with Lydia Matthews (Parsons School of Design) and Ioanna Theocharopoulou (Cornell University). Results from these three interlinked activities will be progressively presented in 2023 in digital and on-site actions.

Implemented in collaboration with the Municipal Enterprise of Sifnos, the Sifnos Potters’ Union, and the working group of the Museum for Contemporary Pottery on Sifnos, and under the auspices and with the financial support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports.
