Stonethrowers by Sofia Dona Cycladic premiere in Serifos

A special screening commemorating the historic Serifos miners’ strike of 21 August 1916

Marking 110 years since the historic miners’ strike of 1916 in Serifos, Archipelago Network and the Association of Mega Livadi – Serifos present the Cycladic premiere of Stonethrowers, a multimedia essay film by Sofia Dona, commissioned as part of Archipelago Network’s project “Extraction in the Cyclades: Digital Traces.”

During her residency on the island in the winter of 2025, in collaboration with Kotoki Art Space, the artist investigated local photographic and recorded oral histories, uncovering traces of Aikaterini Valsamaki, a key figure in the uprising at the iron mines of Mega Livadi.

Through image research, interviews and visual reconstructions of the key sites and protagonists of the 1916 strike—which claimed nine lives, left dozens injured and persecuted, and ultimately led to the first implementation of the eight-hour working day in Greece—the film highlights the pivotal role of women in the uprising, opening a broader conversation on collective memory, labour and the gendered dimensions of history.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artist.
