Italian Occupation | Pottery of Sifnos

In the period before World War II, over 45 potteries were distributed throughout Sifnos’s coastal villages, accounting for 100 pottery wheels, a workforce of over 500 people, and an annual production of hundreds of thousands of functional ceramics. In 1941, Sifnos joined the Italian administration in the context of the occupation of the Greek territories by the Axis Powers. This collection, presented in collaboration with the Historical Archive of the Cyclades – GAK, contains a selection of telegraphs, letters and other documents kept by the Italian authorities between 1942 and 1943, providing evidence of the prolific production that continued during this period, and the regional trade networks connecting Sifnos with the Cyclades and beyond.
