Presentation at “Future by the Sea” 2023 Symposium

In November 2023, Jacob Moe, founder and lead researcher of Archipelago Network, presented Cycladic Maritime Trades at an online symposium hosted by the University of Helsinki titled “The Future by the Sea: Engaging with Maritime Archaeological Research during the Climate Emergency.”

Drawing from extensive research and documentation, the presentation explored how boatbuilding, coastal fishing and seafaring traditions offer valuable insights into the region’s cultural heritage and its adaptation to environmental challenges.

Throughout the session, participants engaged in discussions regarding the future of archaeology within the climate emergency, strategies to manage and safeguard maritime heritage, and the support needed for early career researchers in the field. These conversations provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by maritime archaeologists, anthropologists, and researchers in the wake of environmental changes, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange for a sustainable future.
